Board Art: Personalising Your Surfboard

Ever thought about giving your surfboard a makeover? Decorating your surfboard with decals is where it's at. Whether you're into bold or subtle designs, decals let you display your personality all over your board. Sophie Fletcher Designs decals are made super tough to last super long on your surfboard.

All hand-drawn on paper, Sophie gets her designs made into decal stickers to stick anywhere you fancy. All of her decals are printed in her local town, Phillip Island, where she grew up and design the stickers.

The vinyl decal sticker art is printed using high quality, long lasting eco-solvent inks onto clear polymeric vinyl. Supplied with convenient, transparent application tape, for easy positioning and simple installation.

These are made to be tough. Sophie surfs 1-2 times a day with these stickers under her feet, constantly taking wax off and re-waxing over the top of the stickers. So don’t worry about ink smudges.

Choosing your decals

Decals come in a variety of designs, from classic patterns to funky graphics and everything in between. Choose decals that resonate with your personal style and interests.

Think about where you want to place your decals on the board. Some prefer a clean look with decals only at the top, while others cover the entire board for maximum impact.

Preparation

Before applying any decals, make sure your surfboard’s surface is clean and dry. Use a mild cleaner to remove any dirt or residue that could affect adhesion.

Application

  • Tape decal into desired position. One strip across the centre and 4 pieces in the corners. Do not remove front application tape or backing paper at this point.
  • Remove the top corners of tape and gently fold the decal in half down to the tape. Slowly peel the backing paper away from the decal until it is flat.
  • Cut backing paper in half with scissors, removing the top half.
  • Carefully fold the decal back to its extended position, holding at the top corners about 20mm above the surface of your board. Starting from the middle, hold the applicator card at a 45 degree angle to the strip of tape and firmly and methodically sweep it left and right, moving away from the middle strip of tape towards the top of the decal. Once the top half is stuck, remove the centre tape and repeat process for the bottom half.
  • Working from a top corner, slowly peel the application tape from the decal until it is completely removed. If the decal lifts at all, go back over the whole application firmly with the applicator card and try again.
